Not sure if telehealth is right for you?
Check your insurance first
If your plan covers Wegovy or Zepbound, a telehealth provider with insurance support (Found, PlushCare, Form Health) or a local clinic can often get your out-of-pocket cost well below $200/month.
Understand compounded vs. brand
Compounded GLP-1 uses the same active ingredient as Ozempic or Wegovy but is mixed by a pharmacy, not the manufacturer. It costs less but is not FDA-approved and is not covered by insurance.
Consider in-person for complex cases
Patients with Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or a history of pancreatitis are better served by an in-person obesity medicine physician who can order labs and coordinate with other specialists.
GLP-1 Telehealth FAQ
Compounded GLP-1 medications are prepared by FDA-registered compounding pharmacies using the same active ingredient as brand-name versions. They are legal when the brand name is on the FDA drug shortage list. Quality varies by pharmacy, so choose providers that use 503B outsourcing facilities.
Some providers accept insurance for the consultation, and a few help you use insurance for the medication itself. Found, Mochi Health, PlushCare, and Form Health have the strongest insurance support. Compounded medication is almost never covered by insurance.
Online programs are faster to start and often cheaper for the medication. Local in-person clinics provide more hands-on monitoring, can draw labs on-site, and are better for patients with complex medical histories. Many patients start online and transition to a local provider after their first few months.
Compounded semaglutide through providers like Ro or Hims starts around $99-199 per month. Brand-name Wegovy and Ozempic cost $1,000+ per month without insurance. If you have insurance coverage, PlushCare or Form Health may get brand-name medication at a much lower copay.
