Everything you need to know about GLP-1 medications, insurance coverage, and finding the right clinic.

01

About GLP-1 Medications

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists are a class of medications originally developed for type 2 diabetes that have shown significant effectiveness for weight loss. They work by mimicking a natural hormone that regulates appetite and blood sugar. Common GLP-1 medications include semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound).

Both contain semaglutide but are FDA-approved for different purposes. Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes management (max dose 2 mg/week), while Wegovy is approved specifically for chronic weight management (max dose 2.4 mg/week). Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate one based on your medical needs.

Both contain tirzepatide, a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist made by Eli Lilly. Mounjaro is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, while Zepbound is FDA-approved specifically for weight loss. They have identical dosing ranges (2.5 mg to 15 mg weekly) but different insurance coverage based on the indication.

Results vary by individual. Clinical trials show average weight loss of 15-20% of body weight with semaglutide (Wegovy) and up to 22% with tirzepatide (Zepbound) over 68-72 weeks. Your results depend on factors including dosage, diet, exercise, and individual metabolism. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized expectations.

The most common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, decreased appetite, and injection site reactions. These are typically mild to moderate and tend to improve over time as your body adjusts. Starting at a low dose and gradually increasing helps minimize side effects. Contact your doctor if side effects are severe or persistent.

Cost & Insurance

Without insurance, brand-name GLP-1 medications typically cost $800-$1,400 per month. However, manufacturer savings programs can reduce this significantly. Compounded versions may cost $200-$500 per month. Many telehealth clinics offer bundled packages that include medication and consultations for $300-$600 per month.

Coverage varies widely by plan. Many commercial insurers now cover Wegovy and Zepbound for weight loss, though they typically require a BMI of 30+ (or 27+ with a weight-related condition), prior authorization, and sometimes documentation of failed diet attempts. Medicare Part D has expanded coverage as of 2026. Check with your specific plan for details.

Finding a Clinic

Use our clinic search tool to find GLP-1 providers near you. You can filter by location, medication type, insurance accepted, and whether the clinic offers telehealth or in-person visits. We list over 2,770 clinics across all 50 states.

Telehealth is great for convenience, faster access, and if you're generally healthy. In-person clinics are better if you have complex medical conditions, want hands-on monitoring, or prefer a face-to-face relationship with your provider. Many patients start with telehealth for convenience and switch to in-person as needed.

For FDA-approved weight loss indications, the criteria is a BMI of 30 or higher, OR a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition (such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol). Some clinics may prescribe off-label at their discretion. Your provider will assess your full health picture.
