About GLP-1 Medications

GLP-1 medications are prescription drugs originally made for type 2 diabetes that also help people lose weight. They work by copying a natural hormone that controls your appetite and blood sugar, so you feel full faster and eat less without fighting hunger all day. The most common ones are semaglutide (sold as Ozempic and Wegovy) and tirzepatide (sold as Mounjaro and Zepbound).

Both are the same drug (semaglutide) sold under different names. Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes (max dose 2 mg/week). Wegovy is approved specifically for weight loss (max dose 2.4 mg/week, with a newer 7.2 mg option). Your doctor will prescribe whichever one matches your situation, and your insurance will usually only cover the one that fits your diagnosis.

Both are the same drug (tirzepatide) made by Eli Lilly. It works on two appetite hormones instead of one, which is why it tends to produce stronger results. Mounjaro is approved for type 2 diabetes. Zepbound is approved specifically for weight loss. Same doses (2.5 mg to 15 mg weekly), but insurance coverage depends on which condition you have.

It depends on the person, the medication, and the dose. In research studies, people on Wegovy (semaglutide) lost about 15 to 20% of their body weight over about 16 months, and people on Zepbound (tirzepatide) lost up to 22%. For a 200-pound person, 15% is about 30 pounds. Your results will depend on which medication you take, your dose, your diet, and how much you move. Your doctor can help set realistic expectations.

The most common are stomach-related: nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and reduced appetite. Most people find these improve after the first few weeks as your body adjusts. Starting at a low dose and building up slowly is the main way to keep side effects manageable. Talk to your doctor if anything feels severe or does not get better.

Cost & Insurance

Without insurance, brand-name GLP-1 medications typically cost $800-$1,400 per month. However, manufacturer savings programs can reduce this significantly. Compounded versions may cost $200-$500 per month. Many telehealth clinics offer bundled packages that include medication and consultations for $300-$600 per month.

It depends on your plan. Many insurance companies now cover Wegovy and Zepbound for weight loss, but they usually require a BMI of 30 or higher (or 27+ with a weight-related condition like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or sleep apnea), pre-approval from your insurer, and sometimes proof that you have tried diet and exercise. Medicare has started covering some GLP-1s as of 2026. Call the number on your insurance card to check what your specific plan covers.

Finding a Clinic

Use our clinic search tool to find GLP-1 providers near you. You can filter by location, medication type, insurance accepted, and whether the clinic offers telehealth or in-person visits. We list over 2,888 clinics across all 50 states.

Telehealth is great for convenience, faster access, and if you're generally healthy. In-person clinics are better if you have complex medical conditions, want hands-on monitoring, or prefer a face-to-face relationship with your provider. Many patients start with telehealth for convenience and switch to in-person as needed.

For the FDA-approved weight loss medications (Wegovy and Zepbound), the standard requirement is a BMI of 30 or higher, OR a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition (high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or sleep apnea). Some clinics may prescribe at lower BMIs based on your overall health. Your doctor will look at the full picture, not just one number.
