Not sure if telehealth is right for you?
Check your insurance first
If your plan covers Wegovy or Zepbound, a telehealth provider with insurance support (Found, PlushCare, Form Health) or a local clinic can often get your out-of-pocket cost well below $200/month.
Understand compounded vs. brand
Compounded GLP-1 is mixed by a pharmacy, not the manufacturer. It can cost less, but it is not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review compounded drugs for safety, effectiveness or quality. The FDA says to be wary of any seller that claims a compounded drug is the same as an FDA-approved one. Check whether your plan covers it before you start.
Consider in-person for complex cases
Patients with Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or a history of pancreatitis are better served by an in-person obesity medicine physician who can order labs and coordinate with other specialists.
GLP-1 Telehealth FAQ
Compounded GLP-1s are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are sold. The FDA says they should only be used in patients whose medical needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug. The semaglutide and tirzepatide shortages have ended, and neither drug is on the 503B bulks list, so outsourcing facilities may not make them from bulk ingredients. The FDA has received adverse event reports, some requiring hospitalization, that may be related to dosing errors with compounded semaglutide.
Some providers accept insurance for the consultation, and a few help you use insurance for the medication itself. Compounded medication is almost never covered by insurance.
Online programs are faster to start and often cheaper for the medication. Local in-person clinics provide more hands-on monitoring, can draw labs on-site, and are better for patients with complex medical histories. Many patients start online and transition to a local provider after their first few months.
Novo Nordisk offers a self-pay price for Wegovy through NovoCare. The Wegovy pill starts at $149 a month for the 1.5 mg dose. The pens are $349 a month for 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg, after two $199 months for new patients through December 31, 2026. Eligibility and restrictions apply. Some programs on this page list compounded semaglutide from about $99 to $199 a month, but it is not FDA-approved, and the FDA says compounded drugs should only be used in patients whose medical needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug. If you have insurance coverage, PlushCare or Form Health may get brand-name medication at a much lower copay.
