Saxenda vs Ozempic: Which Is Better for Weight Loss?

Editorially reviewed February 2026

Saxenda (liraglutide) was the original GLP-1 medication approved for weight loss, and doctors still prescribe it regularly. But semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro/Zepbound) have changed the playing field. So where does Saxenda stand now? (See our semaglutide guide.)

Weight Loss Effectiveness

The clinical data is clear on this one. In head-to-head trials, semaglutide beats liraglutide by a wide margin. The STEP trials showed 15-17% average weight loss with semaglutide 2.4 mg, versus 5-8% with liraglutide 3.0 mg. That's roughly double the results. For most patients, semaglutide is the stronger option.

Injection Frequency

This is where Saxenda really falls behind. It's a daily injection — every single day. Ozempic and Wegovy are once a week. If needles bother you even a little, or your schedule is unpredictable, the difference between 365 injections a year and 52 is hard to ignore. Weekly dosing also tends to mean better adherence.

Cost Comparison

Saxenda runs about $1,300-$1,500 per month at retail (check our state-by-state cost breakdown). Wegovy is $1,200-$1,400, and Ozempic $800-$1,000. The prices are in the same ballpark, but here's the wrinkle: Saxenda sometimes has better insurance coverage simply because it's been around longer. Some formularies haven't caught up to the newer drugs yet. (See our GLP-1 insurance coverage guide.) (See our GLP-1 pricing guide.)

Side Effects

Both medications cause the usual GI issues — nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea. Some patients actually tolerate Saxenda's daily dosing better because the drug levels stay more consistent. With weekly semaglutide, some people get a nausea spike after their injection day that fades as the week goes on. It varies from person to person.

When Saxenda Makes Sense

Saxenda isn't the default choice anymore, but it's far from obsolete. It makes sense if your insurance covers it but won't pay for semaglutide, if you tried semaglutide and the side effects were unbearable, if you want finer dose control (daily dosing gives you more room to adjust), or if your provider specifically recommends it for your situation.

The Bottom Line

Most patients will do better on semaglutide or tirzepatide — more weight loss, fewer injections. But Saxenda still has its place, especially when insurance or tolerability makes the newer drugs impractical. Compare providers in San Antonio and Jacksonville. (See our tirzepatide guide.)
