Telehealth vs In-Person GLP-1 Clinics: How to Choose

You can get GLP-1 weight loss medications two main ways: through an online (telehealth) clinic or an in-person clinic you visit. Both can prescribe the same FDA-approved drugs. The right choice comes down to your health, your budget, and how much hands-on care you want. (See our telehealth GLP-1 providers.)

How each one works

With telehealth, you meet a provider by video or messaging. If a GLP-1 is a good fit, they send the prescription to a pharmacy, and follow-ups happen online. It's convenient, and it opens the door for people in rural areas or anyone who values privacy.

With in-person care, you visit a clinic. A provider does a physical exam, can run labs on-site, and monitors you face to face. This works well for complex cases or people managing other health conditions. Not sure where to start? Our guide on how to get a GLP-1 prescription walks through both paths.

Pros and cons

Telehealth

  • Pros: no commute or waiting room, quick to get started (here's what to expect at your first appointment), medication often ships to your door, and you're not limited to local providers.
  • Cons: no hands-on exam, you may need to arrange labs on your own, and many platforms don't bill insurance for the visit.

In-person

  • Pros: full physical exam, labs and monitoring on-site, a face-to-face relationship, and better support for tricky medical histories.
  • Cons: you have to travel, wait times can run weeks, and visit fees may be higher.

Cost differences

Telehealth visits are often lower cost than an in-person specialist visit, and the membership model is usually flat and predictable. In-person visits can cost more but are more likely to bill your insurance, which may lower what you pay out of pocket.

The medication itself is a separate cost from the visit. Prices vary, and self-pay and manufacturer savings-card options exist for the brand-name GLP-1s (Wegovy, Zepbound, Ozempic, and Mounjaro). One thing to skip: don't choose telehealth just to chase cheap compounded GLP-1s. Those are no longer a routine low-cost option in 2026. Compare typical costs on our GLP-1 pricing page.

Lab work and monitoring

Good care in either setting includes baseline labs, regular check-ins, and dose titration, which means slowly increasing your dose over time so your body adjusts and side effects stay milder. Your provider should also watch for side effects like nausea. In-person clinics handle labs on-site. With telehealth, you may need a separate lab visit, so ask how the platform orders and reviews your bloodwork before you sign up.

Insurance

In-person clinics are more likely to accept insurance, though coverage for weight loss meds is uneven. Many telehealth platforms run cash-pay for the visit. Either way, check your plan first. Our guide on whether insurance covers GLP-1s and our insurance coverage page can help you sort it out.

How to decide

If you're in generally good health and your goal is straightforward, telehealth is a solid way to get moving fast. If you manage several conditions, take multiple medications, or simply prefer face-to-face care, an in-person clinic makes more sense. Look at providers in cities like Jacksonville and San Jose.
