Not knowing what a medical weight loss program will cost is one of the biggest things that keeps people from starting. Clinic websites love to say "call for pricing" or bury the numbers behind a consultation. That lack of clarity makes it hard to plan — and easy to feel like you're being sold to rather than treated.
We looked at pricing data from hundreds of weight loss clinics in our directory to put together a realistic picture of what medical weight loss programs actually charge in 2026.
The Total Cost Picture
A typical medical weight loss program with GLP-1 medications costs between $250 and $600 per month at a specialized clinic. That's the all-in number — medication, provider visits, and basic monitoring included. Some clinics run cheaper, some run higher, and the spread depends on your location, the specific drug, and what's bundled into the price.
For comparison, filling the same prescription at a retail pharmacy without insurance costs $900 to $1,400 per month — and that doesn't include doctor visits or lab work. Our savings calculator breaks down the full cost comparison.
Breaking Down the Costs
Initial Consultation: $0-$250
A lot of weight loss clinics offer free initial consultations. They know that first visit is their chance to earn your business. If a clinic does charge for the initial appointment, expect $100-$250.
During this visit, the provider checks whether you're a good candidate for medication, talks through which drug might be right, and explains their program and pricing. Our guide on what to expect at your first appointment covers this in more detail.
Lab Work: $50-$300
Most clinics require baseline blood work before they'll prescribe anything. The usual tests include:
- Complete metabolic panel (CMP)
- Lipid panel (cholesterol)
- HbA1c (blood sugar)
- Thyroid function (TSH)
- Liver enzymes (ALT, AST)
Some clinics fold labs into the program fee. Others charge separately or send you to an outside lab. If you have insurance, your labs might be covered as preventive care even when the medication isn't. Follow-up labs typically happen every 3-6 months.
Monthly Medication Cost: $200-$500
This is the biggest expense and the one that varies the most. What you'll pay depends on which medication you're taking:
Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy)
- At a weight loss clinic: $200-$400 per month (usually compounded semaglutide)
- At a retail pharmacy (no insurance): $900-$1,400 per month (brand name)
- At a retail pharmacy (with insurance): $25-$500 per month depending on your plan

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro/Zepbound)
- At a weight loss clinic: $250-$500 per month
- At a retail pharmacy (no insurance): $1,000-$1,200 per month
- At a retail pharmacy (with insurance): $25-$500 per month depending on your plan

Monthly Provider Visits: $0-$150
Most programs include regular check-ins, either in person or over telehealth. How often you go in depends on the stage:
- First 3 months: Monthly visits for dose adjustments, side effect management, and tracking
- After 3 months: Every 6-8 weeks if things are going smoothly
- Maintenance phase: Quarterly visits once you've hit your goal
Bundled programs include visits in the monthly fee. A la carte clinics charge $75-$150 per appointment. Telehealth visits generally cost less than in-person ones.
Optional Add-Ons: $0-$200/month
Some clinics offer extras at an additional cost:
- Nutritional counseling: $50-$100 per session
- Body composition analysis (DEXA scan): $75-$150 per scan
- B12 or lipotropic injections: $25-$50 per injection
- Meal planning services: $50-$100 per month
These are usually optional and not essential for good results. The core of the program — medication plus provider monitoring — is what drives the weight loss. Check out our foods to eat and avoid guide for free dietary guidance.
Clinic Pricing vs. DIY Approach
Some patients try to save money by getting a prescription from their PCP and filling it at a chain pharmacy. In most cases, this actually costs more:
| Expense | Weight Loss Clinic | PCP + Retail Pharmacy |
|---|---|---|
| Medication (monthly) | $200-$400 | $900-$1,400 |
| Doctor visits (monthly) | Included | $150-$300 (copay) |
| Lab work (quarterly) | Often included | $100-$300 (copay) |
| Total per month | $250-$500 | $1,050-$1,700 |
The clinic route is almost always cheaper for cash-pay patients. That gap shrinks if you have great insurance with a low copay on the medication — but even then, clinics offer more specialized care and closer monitoring.
How to Compare Clinic Costs
When you're evaluating clinics, ask these questions to get a real apples-to-apples comparison:
- What's included in the monthly fee? (Medication, visits, labs, or just some of those?)
- Are there startup or enrollment fees?
- Is there a minimum commitment?
- What if the medication doesn't work for me — can I switch without extra charges?
- Do you bill insurance for office visits or labs, even if the medication is cash-pay?
Our pricing guide has aggregate cost data from hundreds of clinics, including state-by-state breakdowns.
Does Insurance Help With Any of This?
Even when insurance won't cover the medication itself, it may cover related costs. Plenty of plans pay for:
- The initial consultation (as a specialist visit)
- Lab work (as preventive care or diagnostic testing)
- Follow-up visits (as chronic disease management)
That can shave $200-$500 off your annual out-of-pocket costs. Health policy researchers at ConscienHealth track how obesity treatment coverage is evolving. Our insurance coverage guide goes deeper on what your plan might pay for. (See our GLP-1 insurance coverage guide.)
Finding an Affordable Program
The most important thing you can do is compare at least 2-3 clinics before committing. Prices vary a lot, and the most expensive option isn't necessarily the best one.
